Working and sleeping in nature, making friends with people from all around the world, discovering the beautiful nature of the Canary Islands, and eating restaurant-quality meals twice a day. If these sound like experiences you would like to try, read on. I stayed at Finca la Castaña for five weeks and slept in their lodge tent. It was surprisingly comfortable. I only have one recommendation: bring a proper sleeping bag. Even though the weather is perfect during the day, the temperature drops below comfortable levels at night, even in August. The work at the finca is often quite simple, and depends on the season. I stayed through August and September and participated in several projects, such as collecting plums and developing the permaculture by planting new trees. I think I planted 20-30 trees during my stay. Except for that, work may also include maintaining the finca with tasks such as moving rocks, creating swales for the permaculture, weeding, and general nurturing of the finca. I had a really nice stay, learned many things and would definitely go again if i could. If you decide to go, here are a few tips: -A trip to Orotava takes ≈ 20 minutes by foot, and here you will find many cozy cafés, such as Casa Verde and bar Parada -Playa el Bollullo is the best beach in nearby, but requires a bus trip and a bit of hiking to get to -Definitely go to el Teide; it was the highlights of my stay -Get a Titsa bus card, it’s way cheaper -Thank the chef

I stayed at the finca for three weeks. It was my first wwoof experience. Based on the many positive reviews and extended information about the finca on their website, I decided to apply for a stay. It have been really an amazing place with stunning views and perfectly suited to host volunteers. There are several exceptional buildings where volunteers can sleep during their stay. The hosts are taking a lot of effort to create a green paradise. They have a great knowledge about ecological farming and try to share this knowledge with the volunteers. I had the opportunity to joy them during a visit to a exotic plant nursery. The work itself can be pretty hard and you will get dirty, but that's part of working in a garden. At the start of the day we met each other at the finca, where the host explained the tasks for that day. The four playful dogs play an important role in the daily life and it was nice to have them around during the day. I had interesting conversations with the hosts and the other volunteers. Also I enjoyed the extended meals they offered. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruit from the garden. I would like to thank you for the stay and I'm very curious how the garden will look like in five years.

I had a nice time on the finca. The daily work routine is well organised, so time runs very quickly. If you want you can learn very much about fruit growing and permaculture. There are lot of projects, so you can practice your craftsmen skills as well 😉 The food is varied and always freshly cooked. You will get used to country life. That means you will be woken by the chickens each morning 😉 If you want to travel at the weekends I recommend to rent a car. It takes time to get to the Finca by buses

I had my first Wwoofing experience, four lovely weeks, at Finca La Castaña. It was far beyond my expectations from all points of view. The hosts are kind and very generous; the Finca is well maintained and rich with luxurious vegetation; the work days were balanced and well structured, so days flew by quickly; the food was plenty and delicious; I met 5 other Wwoofers with whom it was a pleasure to spend time and discover the island together. Overall a truly awesome experience.

For me this was my first wwoof experience, and it was beyond my expectations! I want to thank you very much for the experience to join the team at casa la castana. The finca is a magical place with al the birds and all its varieties of fruits and veggies. And the finca is a good workout at the same time walking up and down! I really enjoyed working in the garden, picking fruits, seeding and helping the guys with their tasks. I slept in the tent, wich I enjoyed very much. Every morning the dogs were there to wake me up. Robert and Katrine are amazing cooks, everyday there was a little party on the table. I'm thankful for meeting you all and I hope to come back one day!

The Finca La Castaña is located in the green north of Tenerife and probably describes one of the most intense experiences away from home that I have ever had.
Right from the start I felt absolutely drawn to the positive atmosphere, the beautiful nature and the ecological concept of the finca.
In addition, the two hosts, together with their pack consisting of 4 beautiful dogs and 2 cats, are absolutely lovely people who have put a lot of effort into making the finca my home for the time of my stay.

First of all, I would like to emphasize YES, even if the finca is not commercial, people actually work there and there is enough work on such a large finca. I strongly recommend that you read the FAQ on the website, after that you will be perfectly prepared and know what to expect. If you only want a holiday, prefer the most special diets, and are work-shy, this finca could be the wrong place for you.
For all those who enjoy working together and are also interested and committed, the finca is the perfect place, especially because the finca is not run commercially, the host gives you the chance to learn a lot and try everything out.
I was on the finca for 3 weeks and still had more than enough time to explore the island, which has so many completely different natural wonders in store.

Do you want to work in the Canary Islands? Then I can only recommend this host to you.
Administrator-Antwort:

I arrived on the finca in the evening. I haven't had a good picture of this place by then. The next morning, I saw the finca in it's true glory. Such a beautiful piece of land! I've had a detailed and quite informative tour on my first day.
During the 2 months I stayed on the finca, I've learned a lot. We did so many different tasks together. I've learned how to set up a proper compost, install an irrigation system, cut trees and bushes, brew liquor, use a lot of tools and many more things. Josef and his wife were always up for sharing their experience and helping us out.
I'm thankful for this great time I've had on the finca and would recommend their place to everyone, that are willing to work, learn and improve their skillset!
Thank you!
Luca

This has been one of my first workaway experiences and I really enjoyed my time. The finca is a little paradise, you have tons of different fruits and vegetables and incredible views. I was helping out with the permaculture project, weeding the area, planting new things or watering the plants - so you should definitely enjoy being outside and doing some physical work. The owners are very happy to share their knowledge with you and if you have an open ear you'll leave as a wiser person ;). Also, they truly care about good food and make sure to share their passion with all workawayers, especially the different jams are simply delicious! Maybe one thing to be aware of that the finca is (as almost all) a bit further off - walking to La Orotava takes about 30 min, by bus around 15 (though they rarely come on time) and to get to the ocean to Puerto it takes you around an hour. Also make sure to read their FAQs beforehand - will help you to prepare for your stay! 🙂

I wish you only the best for the future!
Cheers,
Rosie

After our month at the finca castaña we are very happy that this stay was part of our journey. When we arrived, three really cute dogs welcomed us as they are always in the garden along with the volunteers.
While working we always had this stunning view down to the sea, that‘s really unique. Besides that, the garden itself is really beautiful with so many plant varieties. Very pleasant surroundings to spend time at. It was very nice to exchange our knowledge in gardening and construction. We defenitely learned a lot. And the food was excellent.
Thank you again for the lovely time that we had together 🙂

I spent 3 very good weeks at the finca. The finca is big and beautiful, full of many many different kinds of fruits and crops. The work itself is very physical. I worked in the garden and did many different things like removing weeds, (re)potting plants, watering the planters, cleaning the henhouse... It was lovely to work with the earth and contributing to this ecological heaven. The yurt where I stayed in with two other volunteers was very comfortable. In my opinion the the finca is well-located; about 10 minutes by foot to the bus station (to get to Puerto) and 15-20 minutes to get to downtown La Oratava, a nice village that has everything you need. If you don't have a car, you will be just fine here. Although, if you wanna explore much of the island besides working hours and on weekends, a car would surely be convenient.

The owners, Robbert and Katrin, are kind and hospitable. They are used to having volunteers around all the time and appreciate honest communication. During the day, we had three moments where we all got together. We started the day at 8pm with coffee/-tea and then had two big, nice and healthy meals later in the day. I can recommend reading the website of Finca La Castaña before coming so you learn more about the project and you know what to expect.

The best part of this experience eventually was the amazing group of volunteers (it was 4 of us in total), all the good conversations and fun stuff we did together. I would recommend coming here when you like to work outside, are not afraid to get your hands dirty, appreciate open communication, wanna learn more about ecological pharming and simply wanna have a good time in a quiet place in the north of Tenerife

What a rewarding stay over the last 2 months at Finca la Castana on northern Tenerife! 🙂

Imagine a paradise of thousand different plants, spectacular construction projects and hosts who love to cook amazing meals and share their vast knowledge. You will be surrounded by lovely dogs, chicken and a cat with always blue ocean and golden sunsets on the background.
This place needs people to get things done and accept the challenge of working mainly physical around house and garden. Invest your skills and learn new ones. Your effort is much appreciated!

My tasks included: renovating the main building, setting up a solar roof and laying electric cable, a lot (a lot) of weeding, cutting down trees, planting vegetables, harvesting fruits for high quality liqueur and burning bad roots with a big fire. Everyday something new to discover.

Today I am leaving with my campervan to explore Tenerife on my own. I am taking with me wonderful memories, proper construction skills, super nice friends, a full mind, lots of inspiration and a van completly set up for next trips.

I will be glad to return next winter to see how you are doing and enjoy your place again. Hope to stay in contact and let me know when I can help with anything.

Liebe Grüße
Karsten

I stayed 5 weeks at Finca la Castaña and I really enjoyed it.
The owners are nice people, who have experience with Wwoofing. I think you can learn a lot from them, not just Permaculture, but generell things of life. Just show interest and ask questions, they will be happy to teach you. We had a lot of interesting conversations about life, politics and our system of living.
Their Finca is beautiful with a lot of space, you truly live in paradise. My accomodation was in a Mongolian yurte with two other Wwoofers. I loved sleeping their in my sleeping bag, it was really cozy. They also have a tent and a hobbit house. So be sure there are always other Wwoofers around 🙂
Work was nice as well. Because I came in early spring I did a lot of weeding, which I enjoyed as my first Wwoof experience. After time I asked for another task and the owners were open and totally fine with giving me something else, such as planting seeds, cutting trees or collecting fruits from the trees. On rainy days we helped in the kitchen preparing food or the boys worked in the basement.
Food was good as well, but be prepared that their is a longer break between brunch and dinner. You totally get used to it, but I still want to mentioned it. You could also go down into the City 'La Orotava' and get yourself a small snack. In my opinion is this city one of the most beautiful ones of Tenerife.
Life really slows down at this beautiful place, I'm sure I will never forget this experience!

I spent my first wwoofing experience, almost five amazing weeks, at Finca La Castaña. It’s a wonderful place, you can discover new plants and corners every time and enjoy the view - you can see the ocean and the Teide volcano as well!
The accommodation was in a cozy yurt, where you can spend nice time with the other wwoofers. 🙂
The owners are very kind people, with incredible stories! They served super delicious meals twice a day, and we spent them together over exciting talks, accompanied with the cutest three dogs and a friendly cat.
The work was mainly weeding, besides feeding the chickens, taking care of the beds in the permaculture garden, and planting new little lives. I loved that Lucy (one of the dogs) is always chilling next to you during work! On the rainy days we worked inside, preparing food, learning new skills and recipes in the kitchen.
In the afternoons you can walk to La Orotava, a beautiful old city where you can find everything you need: old bodegas and a perfect churros place.
The island offers plenty of opportunities and breathtaking landscapes to discover on the weekends. My favourite was the northern part of Anaga mountains, but if you’re not sure where to go just ask the host as they can give you great advices.
I had a really nice time there, I’m honestly thankful for the opportunity!
